Spain vs France Prediction and Betting Tips | 9th July 2024
Spain and France will battle it out at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday for a place in the Euro 2024 showdown. La Roja have been the most impressive side at the continental competition so far and they took out the hosts Germany in the quarter-finals while Les Bleus bested Portugal on penalties.
Spain suffered an early setback against Die Mannschaft, with Pedri picking up an injury inside the first 10 minutes of the game. However, it was his replacement, Dani Olmo, who drew first blood for the Spaniards by neatly depositing the ball in the back of the net from a measured Lamine Yamal pass to the edge of the box.
Tasked with breaking down the steely Spanish defense to claw their way back into the contest, Germany plugged away with conviction. Buoyed by their raucous home support, their efforts eventually bore fruit with only a little more than a minute of the 90 left to play.
Florian Wirtz restored parity for Julian Nagelsmann's men after Joshua Kimmich did exceptionally well to keep the ball in play from a cross which seemed destined for the byline.
Luis de la Fuente's men eventually broke Germany's heart in the 119th minute as Mikel Merino neatly guided an exquisite cross from Olmo past Manuel Neuer and into the corner of the net.
Meanwhile, a wobbly France have been far from convincing in their journey to the semi-finals. No French player has scored from open play at Euro 2024 so far and it evidences the dismal state of their attacking affairs in Germany so far this summer.
Didier Deschamps' men beat Portugal 5-3 on penalties in the quarter-finals after the game ended 0-0 after 120 minutes. If not for their sturdiness at the back, conceding just a single goal at the tournament so far, their Euro journey could have easily been cut short.
Spain vs France Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- Spain and France have met five times so far at major tournaments. France emerged winners in three of the first four matches between the two sides. Spain have been victorious once and one match has ended in a draw.
- Spain vs France will be only the third fixture to be played in each stage of the World Cup and the Euros. The other two fixtures are Italy vs Spain and England vs Germany.
- Spain are the only team to have won all of their five matches so far at Euro 2024. No side has ever won six matches in a row at the continental competition. If they beat France on Tuesday, they will also become the first team to win six games in a single edition.
- France are aiming to make it to the final of the Euros for a fourth time. Meanwhile, Spain are looking to reach their fifth Euro final.
- Spain have won 15 of their 19 matches played since the start of 2023, the best win percentage of any European nation.
Spain vs France Prediction
France have been toothless in attack in Germany, managing to score just three goals so far at Euro 2024. Two of those were own goals while the other was a Kylian Mbappe penalty. Spain have netted 11 times in five matches. Defensively, there's not a lot to separate the two sides.
France have shipped in just one goal while Spain have conceded two. Les Bleus' insipid attack is unlikely to find much joy against De la Fuente's men. On the other hand, Spanish attackers, especially the likes of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal, are in great form and will put France's defensive resolve to the test.
The 16-year-old Yamal has been a talismanic presence down the right flank for Spain, creating a whopping 14 chances at the tournament so far. If there is one team that can break down France's stubborn defence, it is Spain and they should be able to earn a narrow win here.
Prediction: Spain 1-0 France
