Squawka Player of the Week - Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez continued his stunning form this weekend, scoring two more goals to take his tally up to 17 from 11 matches. A truly sublime player who has not stopped scoring since his return from a ban early this season. The Uruguayan missed the opening five Premier League matches but has now outscored 10 (yes, ten) of the teams in the league. His scintillating performance against Spurs, during Liverpool’s fantastic 5-0 rout, meant he is Squawka’s Premier League Player of the Week.

Suarez soared past 100 points in Squawka’s Performance Score for the second time in just over a week. Against Norwich City, he scored 193 – the highest in Europe this season – and amassed another 127 point at White Hart Lane. His Liverpool team-mate, Jordan Henderson, scored the second-highest this weekend with 106.

It was a Merseyside sweep of the top three with Seamus Coleman grabbing third spot with 100 points after scoring for Everton in their 4-1 victory at home to Fulham.

Liverpool’s deadly forward captained the side for the first time in Steven Gerrard’s absence. Some were unsure of it prior to kick-off but the majority – if not all – Liverpool fans will want Suarez to remain captain until Gerrard returns to the side.

He led from the front as he scored two superbly taken goals whilst also assisting two more. He was lethal in front of goal, hitting the target with each of his six shots, achieving a 100% shot accuracy, which is absolutely fantastic. He took the most shots in the league this weekend and hit them all on target.

He also created the most chances for the Reds at White Hart Lane, with four. Henderson marginally behind him with three. The most striking aspect of his chances created is that three of them came from inside Tottenham’s penalty area which provided a huge threat on goal.

He was a constant menace and a thorn in Spurs’ side, proven well by his Heat Map from White Hart Lane. He was a bustling ball of energy that was threatening when on the ball. He often dropped deep to supply the runners of Sterling, Coutinho and Henderson in front of him but then also offered an outlet for those players as the focal point of an ever-changing attack.

His Action Areas map also proves how spread out he was, and how much ground he covered, showing his true worth to Liverpool as an all-round attacking talent.

Suarez’s action areas vs. Spurs

Suarez was fantastic at Spurs and is now truly one of the best players in world football. His captain, Gerrard, said after the match that on current form, he’s the best player in the world right now. It’s hard to argue against that claim, either, after he scored his 16th and 17th league goals in just 11 matches – and that’s after missing the first five games!

A truly sublime display – once again – from Suarez, and one that was deserving of Squawka’s Premier League Player of the Week award.
