Stats: EPL player wages are almost twice as much as La Liga and Bundesliga
In a recent study, it was learned that EPL players earned an average of nearly £2.3million a year (close to £44K per week), which explains why it is such a popular destination for footballers.
That is almost 60% better than the next best paying league – the German Bundesliga – whose players earn an average of £1.45million every year in wages (£28K per week).
Italy’s Serie A comes in third place, paying its professional players a little more than £1.3million per year (approximately £25K per week).
Spain’s La Liga is the fourth and final league where the players earn an average of more than a million at £1.2million per year (£22.3K per week)
France’s Ligue 1 rounds off the top five but fall just short of a million at £989K per year (£19K per week).
Other major leagues like Brazil and Netherlands’ leagues pale in comparison to the top five European heavyweights when it comes to player wages. Portugal’s Primeira Liga doesn’t even make the top 10 while England’s next tier, the Championship, is the eighth best paid league in the world.
Meanwhile, other popular leagues like United States’ Major League Soccer is in 22nd place with an average player salary of £136K per year (£2,614 per week). Australia’s A-League is 29th with an average wage of £65.3K per year (£1,256 per week).
