Stats: Top 10 clinical finishers in the EPL so far
The Premier League is in full swing now that six matches have already been played and fans now have an idea of how their teams have performed. They have also had a good look at their squad and new signings to make a call on whether they have been consistent or not.
It is still the early stages of the season, but there are a number of players who have failed to make a mark at their respective clubs. Just a cursory look at the top scorers in the EPL this season gives us an idea of how poor last year’s top players have been.
The top scorers in the EPL so far are Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City) and Callum Wilson (Bournemouth) with 5 goals each. Mahrez pips Wilson having played lesser minutes. They are followed by Bafetimbi Gomis (Swansea City), Graziano Pelle (Southampton), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) and Odio Ighalo (Watford). How many fans would have guessed that any of these players would top the list after six games?
Last year’s Golden Boot winner Sergio Aguero has scored only one goal in the league and is struggling to get on the scoresheet for Manchester City. Chelsea’s Diego Costa has scored only one goal in the league while Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane is yet to get off the mark.
Goals aside, who has been the most clinical player in the EPL so far? This list throws up some different names altogether. Of the EPL top scorers mentioned earlier, only Wilson makes the top 10.
Top of the list is Manchester United’s new £36m signing Anthony Martial. The 19-year-old striker was doubted by pundits and fans alike even before he had played a game thanks to his hefty price tag.
But the Frenchman has answered all critics with goals in every league game he has played so far – scoring his first goal minutes into his debut against Liverpool at Old Trafford. He has goals from every shot on target so far! That’s three goals in two games, thanks to a brace against Southampton at St Mary’s in a 3-2 away win.
Norwich City’s Russell Martin joins him at the top of the list with 3 goals from 4 shots on target. Everton’s Steven Naismith also makes the list thanks to his hat-trick against Chelsea in a 3-1 win at Goodison Park. Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and midfielder Fernandinho, who have scored two goals each, also feature in the top 10.
