Steve McManaman insists Luis Suarez should be sold if £200 million bid is made

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman believes the Merseysiders’ should consider selling Luis Suarez if they receive an astronomical offer for his services, but would be wise not make his future their biggest concern this summer.

The Uruguayan striker has been in scintillating form for Brendan Rodgers’ side and finished last season as the joint European golden boot winner with 31 goals, along with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ironically, it is the Spanish giants that have been consistently linked with a bid for Suarez throughout the summer as Los Blancos look to continue their Galacticos recruitment drive following their recent Champions League triumph, with reports of a £70m bid

However, the 27-year-old signed a financially lucrative long term contract with Liverpool in December so the club are by no means in a position where they will be powerless to prevent his exit if a bid was received.

But given Suarez’s current stature as one of the most highly rated and coveted players in world football, the speculation surrounding his future has shown no sign of relenting.

The pursuit of their talisman is beginning to threaten and overshadow Liverpool’s own attempts to strengthen their squad which has left McManaman adamant they should consider selling the forward if a sizeable fee is received, but crucially of the belief that his future should not be a priority.

“It’s a very hypothetical question. Everyone’s obsessed with Luis Suarez leaving, you have to draw the line somewhere. He’s just signed a four-year contract and Liverpool are in the Champions League and nearly won the league.

“I don’t think the concern should be Luis Suarez. If someone comes and bids £200 million for him then it might be worthwhile, looking at it and seeing the economical and business side of it.

“It’s the same if PSG pay £500 million for Cristiano Ronaldo. When anybody has four years left on their contract, I think it’s hypothetical. If someone pays enough money, you can get any player across the world,” McManaman insisted.

Meanwhile, <Suarez faces a battle to return to fitness for the World Cup, with Uruguay’s opening Group D fixture against Costa Rica just 10 days away.

No player in Europe’s top five leagues scored more goals from outside the penalty area than Luis Suarez (7) during the 2013/14 campaign.
