The captain of the Indian Football team and star striker Sunil Chhetri is all set to set marry his long-time girlfriend Sonam Bhattacharya, who is also the daughter of Subrata Bhattacharya, one of the finest footballers the country has ever produced.

A former Mohun Bagan player, he was one of the most loyal footballers of the century-old club and stayed with the Mariners throughout his career even after getting attractive transfer offers from other Indian clubs. It has been a season of weddings among the Indian sports personalities; recently cricketers Ishant Sharma and Yuvraj Singh tied the knot amongst much glitz and glamour.

It is learnt as per reports from the Hindustan Times that Sunil Chhetri visited Kolkata recently to finalise talks about the wedding with Subrata Bhattacharya, and is likely to wed his daughter early next year. The former international said, “Yes, Sunil came and met us. They have been in a relationship and I think they should be happy for the rest of their lives.”

The former Mohun Bagan player gave the nod to the nuptials as he was aware of Sonam’s relationship with Sunil Chhetri and said that he wanted the marriage to be held in February or March next year. Bhattacharya has coached Chhetri when he was in charge of Mohun Bagan, and hence have known each other for a long time.

“I have seen Sunil grow as a footballer. I got him to Kolkata Maidan in 2003 and he has improved as a footballer. I can compare him to Xavier Pius of our times,” Bhattacharya told Hindustan Times. “He is a good lad and I like his innocence,” Bhattacharya added.

An ex-student of Business Management from Scotland, Sonam runs hotels in the Salt Lake region in Kolkata. A picture of Sunil Chhetri with Sonam Bhattacharya was posted on social media a few days ago, which started the buzz.

For now, Chhetri will head back to I-League champions, Bengaluru FC, after his stint in the ISL with Mumbai City FC, where the Mumbai club bowed out in the semi-final stage. The I-League season begins in January, while the Bengaluru side also have important AFC Champions League qualification fixtures.
