Swansea's Ben Davies and Michel Vorm move to Tottenham in swap deal for Gylfi Sigurdsson and cash

Ben Davies and Michel Vorm in action for Swansea last season.

Premier League duo Swansea City and Tottenham today confirmed a swap deal that sees Ben Davies and Michel Vorm move to White Hart Lane, while Gylfi Siggurdsson moves in the opposite direction.

The Swans will also receive further cash incentive which is reported to be around £3.5 million.

21-year-old Ben Davies has penned a five-year contract for the North London club, while the 30 year old Michel Vorm out pen to paper on a four year deal.

The two signings represent the first piece of action in the transfer market this off-season by Tottehnham as new boss Mauricio Pochettino tries to stamp his mark on the squad.

Ben Davies will help a lot towards solving the Spurs’ problem on the left hand side of their defence. With Danny Rose missing action for the majority of last season, Jan Verthongen was forced to play out of position on the left on a number of occasions.

Even with Rose now fit to play his part on the left, Pochettino seems keen to improve that side of the field and that is what Davies exactly represents.

Davies shot into the spotlight in the 2012/13 season as he dislodged Neil Taylor from the left-back spot at  the Liberty Stadium under Michael Laudrup. His performances also elevated him to a spot in the Welsh national team as well.

Vorm’s transfer, however, looks to be a curious one. He moves to Tottenham, where they already have a strongly established number one in French skipper Hugo Lloris, who recently signed a five-year extension. Whatever Vorm’s intention might be, it would be hard to believe that the move was made to see more first-team action.

The Dutchman moves to London after spending three seasons at the South Welsh, where he established himself as the undoubted number one. Even with Lukasz Fabaisnki’s move to Swansea, it’s hard to see how his spot would have come under threat from a keeper who wasn’t able to establish himself at Arsenal in his seven years at The Emirates. The Gunners themselves have been in  limbo regarding their goalkeeping situation ever since the departure of Jans Lehmann in 2008.

Siggurdson returns to Swansea

Meanwhile, Gylfi Siggurdson moves back to the club which brought him to the limelight in English football. The Iceland international signed a four year deal at the Liberty Stadium, a place where he spent six months on loan in 2012.

In his hugely successful time at Swansea, Siggurdson was able to find the back of the net on 7 occasions for the Swans in 18 games. The midfielder however, wasn’t able to reproduce his form in North London after his big money move to Tottenham.

In his two seasons spent with the Lilly Whites, Siggurdson scored 8 goals, making 58 appearances for the Spurs (though most of them were as a sub).

With Michu reportedly on his way out, Gary monk is sure to look at Siggurdson to provide a goal-scoring threat from the midfield, which Swansea really lacked last season with Michu missing a large part of the season, owing to injury.
