Swansea City's Bafetimbi Gomis hospitalised after fainting in match against Tottenham Hotspur

Swansea’s Bafetimbi Gomis being carried off the pitch

French striker Bafetimbi Gomis has been hospitalised for tests after needing oxygen during the match against Tottenham Hotspur. Gomis had an early indication of his health and received medical treatment for some time before being taken off the pitch on a stretcher.

Gomis’ incident brings back the horrible memories of Fabrice Muamba’s fainting when his heart actually stopped beating for a few moments at the same White Hart Lane stadium in 2012.

It is not the first time that the striker has faced such a situation – one fainting incident had also occurred during a training session with the French national team in 2009.

Swansea manger Garry Monk assured that everything was under control. He said “"Bafetimbi Gomis is fine. He went to the hospital as a precaution but he is fine. That's the main thing. He just needed a minute but he was talking when he came off the pitch. We understand his history. He has had all the tests but it's just part of life for him."

The Frenchman himself tweeted later on saying, "I wanted to reassure you about my health. Hopefully this looks worse than it is. This kind of discomfort comes from the stress and fatigue caused by my father's health condition that requires a lot of travelling to and from France.

"I'm disappointed I couldn't have helped my team more. I thank you for all your messages of support."
