West Ham United could appoint their former player Teddy Sheringham as a strikers’ coach in a bid to improve their performances next season.

Sheringham, who was at West Ham for three years, was offered the job by Hammers boss Sam Allardyce last week and may help the club adopt an attacking style of play for next term.

The former England international was quoted as saying: “I spoke to Sam and asked for a few days to think it over. It certainly appeals.

“The job is on a part-time basis, a couple of days a week and I’ll be on the bench for home games.
“The club is not far from me and one for which I have a lot of affection. I really enjoyed my time there.“It is also a chance for me to experience the coaching side of the game, something I have never really done before. I would enjoy working with the front players.”

The 48-year-old flew to Ireland on Saturday to attend a two-week course which will help him obtain his coaching badges.

West Ham’s top brass including David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady met last week and decided that it would be best to appoint a former striker as a coach. Allardyce endorsed the idea and decided to contact Sheringham.

Sheringham is most famous for his equalizing goal against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final during his time at Manchester United which inspired him team to one of the most famous comebacks of all time.
