Borussia Dortmund is one of Europe’s biggest clubs and a key factor behind their recent success is their transfer strategy. Dortmund generates a lot of revenue through transfers and the most recent sale of Christian Pulisic for £58m to Chelsea is a testament to this strategy.

Pulisic was signed by Dortmund before he made his professional debut and he came through the academy before finding success with the Dortmund first team and the US national football team.

The American winger isn’t the first player Dortmund sold for a hefty fee in recent years.

Dortmund won two league titles and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League in recent years. Many players from that squad were either academy graduates or players they signed for cheap from other teams. Many of them were transferred to other top European clubs for hefty fees thanks to their performance for Dortmund.

For instance, Mario Gotze and Nuri Sahin were academy graduates who moved to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively before returning to the club. Shinji Kagawa was signed for only €350,000 from Cerezo Osaka before he was sold to Manchester United.

Honourable mentions:

Defenders - Marc Bartra (Real Betis), Neven Subotic (Saint-Etienne) and Erik Durm (Huddersfield Town)

Midfielders - Nuri Sahin (Weder Bremen), Gonzalo Castro (VfB Stuttgart) and Kevin Kampl (RB Leipzig)

This is the only area of the pitch where we had to settle for a player rather than choose between many available options.

Mitchell Langerak was at Dortmund between 2010 and 2015 when he served as the club’s backup goalkeeper. He played 35 times for the club winning five trophies before joining VfB Stuttgart. He helped Stuttgart earn promotion to the Bundesliga in 2017 before joining Levante in the summer.
