The Villa Fiver: Aston Villa Results Compared to Last Season – After 10 Games
The Last Five Aston Villa Results Compared to Last Season’s Equivalent (after 10 Games)
After a tough start to the season there had been enough to show that the next five games would certainly contain the opportunity to pick up points. It hasn’t gone exactly to plan, and there have been a few times in which Villa have lacked the attacking flair shown at the end of last season. We have had injuries to deal with though, so let us take a look at how we have faired over the past five games in relation to last season.
Aston Villa results from games five to ten with last season’s corresponding result in brackets
Manchester City (h) W 3-2 (L 1-0)
Hull City (a) D 0-0 (W 2-1 – again comparing Hull to Reading, for instance)
Tottenham (h) L 2-0 (L 4-0)
Everton (h) L 2-0 (L 3-1)
West Ham (a) D 0-0 (L 1-0)
Points difference compared to fixtures last season – + 2
Goal difference compared to fixtures last season – +4
Goals scored – 3 (3)
Goals conceded – 6 (10)
After 10 Games Total
Points difference compared to the same fixtures last season – + 5
Goal difference compared to same fixtures last season – +14
Goals scored – 9 (8)
Goals conceded – 12 (25)
Much like during the first few fixtures of the season, we’ve seen a mixture of disappointing results alongside a dream victory. With our away form it would have been expected that we’d get more than just a point from Hull and West Ham, though this is somewhat balanced out by the excellent home win against Pellegrini’s men. After ten games last season (and an easier run) we had nine points, so it’s pleasing that we are currently two points better off, and that we took a significant five points more than we did from the corresponding games last season.
Could we have got better results in a couple of those games? Yes, perhaps, but at least we know the defence is improving – we’ve now had three consecutive away clean sheets and an improvement of shipping 13 less goals in corresponding games last season.
There are certainly signs that Villa are doing a lot of work on defending, and after some good performances it’s perhaps surprising to see that we’re currently 14th. There is however, a long way to go in the season. Here are Villa’s next five games, with the results from last season.
Cardiff City (h) (W 3-2 – compared to QPR)
West Bromwich Albion (a) (D 2-2)
Sunderland (h) (W 6-1)
Southampton (a) (L 4-1)
Fulham (a) (L 1-0)
With respect to the teams above, on paper, this represents what Villa’s easiest run so far. Two home games that would be a good springboard for points at a Villa Park that hasn’t quite been the fortress we would have hoped. A fiery derby at WBA, and an away day to Fulham, who are currently looking to be in a bit of trouble. I imagine Southampton will be a tough game, but Villa are highly unpredictable at the moment. Whichever way you look at it, Villa’s start to the season has been solid, and the next five games represent a good chance to climb up the table. UTV.
