1930 – Uruguay won the first football World Cup by beating Argentina 4-2 in in Montevideo.

1966 – England football team won the World Cup by defeating West Germany 4-2.

1968 – Ron Hansen of the Washington Senators made the first unassisted triple play in the major leagues in 41 years.

1971 – U.S. President Nixon delivered the keynote speech at a banquet honouring seven new inductees into the Professional Football Hall of Fame.

1990 – The then-England captain, Graham Gooch, piled misery on the Indian bowlers at Lord’s as he scored the 456th run in a single Test match. His tally of 456 (333 in the first innings and 123 in the second) is the highest in Test cricket history.

2001 – Former Dallas Cowboy receiver Michael Irvin pleaded innocence for a felony charge of possession of less than a gram of cocaine.

2001 – Lance Armstrong became the first American road racing cyclist to win three consecutive Tour de France.
