Three candidates to replace Marco Silva at Everton
After fighting so hard to secure the services of Marco Silva, things have not gone well for Everton and the former Watford manager. Since arriving in Merseyside, the Portuguese coach has lost 23 games out of 59. Currently, the Toffees sit 16th in the league, having lost 7 out of 13 matches already. This is not the top six challenging form the board expected, especially after investing £107.91 million in the summer.
Everton has bought players of top quality to seemingly become worse than last season. A surprise 2-0 home defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Norwich has put the 42-year-old under severe pressure, with many questioning his ability to lead this club into the future.
As a firmly established Premier League side, Everton is an extremely attractive proposition for any manager.
Here are three candidates to replace Marco Silva at Everton.
#3 Mikel Arteta
Over the past 12 months, Mikel Arteta’s name has begun to spring up more frequently in the discussion of vacant jobs. It’s clear the Spaniard’s tenure as Pep Guardiola’s number two has worked wonders for his credentials. Several Manchester City players have publicly spoken about their admiration for Arteta and the work he’s done on the training pitch for their careers.
More recently, the 37-year-old has been heavily linked with the Arsenal job, as Unai Emery’s time at the Emirates is rapidly coming to an end. For as much as he’s an Arsenal fan favourite, Arteta is an Everton legend. The former midfielder played more games for Everton than he did for any other team.
If Arteta has learnt just half of Guardiola’s expertise, he’ll be a great manager. It’s a matter of when not if in regards to the Spaniard’s managerial career beginning. Hopefully, Everton will be the first of many to take a chance on him.
