Tim Howard credits penalty save against Aston Villa to beard

Tim Howard has been in excellent form so far this season for Everton

Everton’s American goalkeeper Tim Howard has revealed that his facial hair is to be credited for giving him strength.

Howard, who pulled off a spectacular save to deny Christian Benteke from the spot, credits his gruff beard for his high level of performances so far this season, including the save from the weekend.

Everton went on to win the match 2-0, but they could have been left to chase the game had it not been for Howard’s save.

The American was speaking to Everton’s official website on his newfound strength:

“I think I’ve gained most of my strength from the beard.”, Howard joked.

“If I’m honest it was lucky. I thought Benteke would go to the right. He is a very powerful boy and for a right-footer, that’s his power side.”

“I didn’t get it quite right as he went high but I got a little bit of luck, reacted and kept it out.”

Howard’s beard has become a revelation in social media circles with it acquiring a sort of cult following amongst fans.

The American also went on to credit his central defensive partnership of Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka for making his job considerably easier with their excellent displays.

“They are mountains for me and I’ve had success because of those two guys.”

“Nothing goes past them and they orchestrate and conduct things at the back.”

“Every week it’s a pleasure to play with them.”, said Howard.
