This Saturday sees Tottenham Hotspur play host to Burnley in a Premier League fixture, with a lot on the line for both sides. Jose Mourinho’s Spurs were defeated by Manchester United on Wednesday, but can move back into 5th place with a win if other results go favourably for them, while Burnley – defeated 1-4 by Manchester City on Tuesday – can leapfrog Spurs with a win.A loss for the Clarets however could see them slip down into the lower echelon of the table. With the packed Christmas period now close on the horizon, neither side can really afford a loss here – making this one of the weekend’s more intriguing fixtures.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Burnley Head-to-Head

The historical record between these two sides is surprisingly even; 46 wins for Spurs and 41 for Burnley with 27 draws. Recent fixtures have been kinder to Tottenham; until Burnley’s surprising victory over them in February, they hadn’t lost to the Clarets since 2010, with that February fixture snapping a 9-match unbeaten run for Spurs.

Burnley’s only long term injury concern remains Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who has been unavailable since mid-October. Charlie Taylor and Ashley Westwood are both doubtful, while striker Ashley Barnes should be fit to return.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Burnley Prediction

It’s tricky to guess how Spurs will look these days; even under Jose Mourinho their defence still appears to be suspect and they looked very poor against Manchester United midweek. If Mourinho can get the midfield combination right, however, they should be able to defeat Burnley, as the Clarets have struggled to keep clean sheets this term and may find it hard to contain the on-form Dele Alli. Mourinho will be hoping for his first clean sheet at Tottenham, but with Burnley not finding goals hard to come by, that might be tricky. Expect a tight match.

Verdict: Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Burnley
