What's the story?

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has given an update on striker Harry Kane's injury stating that the Englishman will only return if the club reaches the UEFA Champions League finals.

In case you didn't know...

The 25-year-old striker sustained ligament damage to his ankle after colliding with Manchester City's Fabian Delph in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final fixture on Tuesday.

The Spurs established a crucial 1-0 win over the Premier League defending champions in the European competition to give them a much-needed advantage going into the second leg of the fixture.

This is the third time that Kane has injured his ankle, the most recent of which was against Manchester United in January, which resulted in him sitting out four league games.

The heart of the matter

Pochettino has stated that it is too early to predict Kane's duration of absence but believes he will only return if the Spurs reach the Champions League finals.

Speaking to reporters (via The Sun), the Argentine manager said, "[Kane] feels sad and disappointed like everyone. It’s a tough moment for Kane, the team and us. Today it is impossible to give a date. He suffered a similar injury last time, and that took five weeks."

"If we arrive in the final of the Champions League, maybe he would have the possibility to play, but we’ll see."

"We need to assess him, but he’s not in a great place which is normal after a few days."

What's next?

The Spurs currently sit at fourth place on the Premier League table, two points away from third-placed Chelsea. They will hope to overtake their London rivals when they face Huddersfield Town later today.

Pochettino's men will then head to the Etihad for the second leg of their Champions League fixture against City on April 17.
