Reports: Tottenham plot £40M move for former Manchester United star

AFC Bournemouth v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League
Mauricio Pochettino’s side failed with two bids for Wilfried Zaha

What’s the rumour?

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have reignited their pursuit of Wilfried Zaha and are have plotted a £40million summer move for the Crystal Palace winger.

In case you didn't know

Zaha has been in great form and progressed through the ranks at Palace since returning to the club from Manchester United in 2014.

He has scored four goals and provided three assists from 22 league matches this season after signing a new five-year contract worth more than £100,000-a-week last May.

The heart of the matter

Last summer, Mauricio Pochettino's side failed with two bids for the 25-year-old - a £12m offer that was branded 'ridiculous' by Eagles chairman Steve Parish and an improved bid of £25 million.

The north London club are hopeful of finally landing the Ivory Coast international this time, as they are offering a fee in the region of £40 million.

Tottenham's new stadium, which is scheduled to open next season, could cost them around £750 million and the club would like to make a statement by spending a substantial amount on Zaha, proving that they are still ready to spend big in the transfer market.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

This season, Palace played nine league games without Zaha and lost all of them. They also moved out of the relegation zone when he returned from a knee injury in Saturday's 2-0 win at Huddersfield, his first start since February 4.

So, it seems that Roy Hodgson would want to keep his prized asset at Selhurst Park.

Author’s take

Pochettino is keen to bolster his attacking options and Zaha would be an ideal fit as he possesses all the attributes this Tottenham squad lacks.

Zaha has the ability to play through the middle and can carry the responsibility of being his team's main goalscorer.
