Tweets: How the press reacted to Arsenal’s defeat to Bayern Munich
Arsenal and Bayern Munich lived up to expectation as they served up a treat in the first leg of their last 16 Champions League clash, in a game that was not short of talking points.
Mesut Ozil missed a penalty, as did Bayern’s David Alaba, with Wojciech Szczesny having seen red in the build up to Alaba’s miss.
Toni Kroos was the star of the show as he put in an imperious performance which was capped with a goal, with Thomas Muller adding a second late on.
Here’s how the media reacted to an accomplished display from the reigning European champions and the bad luck that haunted the English once again.

Big fan of Wenger but absurd for him to suggest last night that robben dived. Szczesny mistimed his challenge and took him out

Not a popular opinion when people caught up in “English team robbed by ref” narrative, but look at the challenge. Red card anywhere on pitch
— Oliver Kay (@OliverKayTimes) February 19, 2014
The double punishment of a penalty and red card always feels a bit harsh to me, especially when it’s not malicious or dangerous.

Ozil the only Arsenal player who looks soft in this game so far. Soft in his challenges and feeble with the pen. The others are like tigers.

Someone needs to give Özil a dose of smelling salts at half time to try & wake him from his post-penalty miss malaise. #AFCvBM

Ozil, as i said, is physically and mentally shot. Bring him off the bench for a couple of games.

Never understood why a player gets a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity if it’s a penalty. A penalty is a goal scoring opp!

You can bet Boateng would’ve been booked there, if he hadn’t been booked already. Mental block for referees in 1st half of big games

Feel sorry for Arsenal. But it could have been worse.

Nobody at Bayern knows why Wenger didn’t give Guardiola a handshake before or after the game. What rattled his cage?
