Twitter erupts as Cristiano Ronaldo's brace helps Real Madrid beat PSG 3-1
Final scoreline: Real Madrid 3-1 Paris Saint-Germain
Goalscorers: Adrien Rabiot 33'(PSG), Cristiano Ronaldo 45', 83' (Real Madrid), Marcelo 86' (Real Madrid)
In what turned out to be, perhaps, the most hyped match in recent times, Real Madrid played host to a formidable Paris Saint-Germain side in the first of their two-legged UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.
Amid immense fanfare, two superhumans - Cristiano Ronaldo, and Neymar, were set to lock horns in what promised to be a mouth-watering affair - one that would keep the world on the edge of their seats until a winner is decided - and excite it did.
Both teams started off well, looking for an early breakthrough to capitalise on. Ironically, it was Paris Saint-Germain who broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. Real Madrid's resident superhero then decided to make the night his on, as Cristiano Ronaldo then went on to prove the age-old saying "form is temporary, but class is permanent".
He may have struggled all season, but on the night, his two goals - the first was a penalty that he nonchalantly put past Alphonse Areola, and the second was an 'in the right place at the right time' kind of goal that saw him rather cluelessly deflect the ball into the back of the net. The 5-time Ballon d'Or winner now has 100 UEFA Champions League goals for Real Madrid. Insane.
On the night, Ronaldo and Madrid unquestionably reigned supreme over Neymar and PSG, and Twitter was it's busiest best as tweets flooded in from all over the globe as the most awaited match of the season was played out at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Here's a look at some of the best tweets:
First up, a look at the goals:
The hype and fanfare surrounding this match were on a whole different level, with both teams originally being favourites to lift the cup.
From the very first second, both teams looked to play positive football, thus making the match an extremely interesting one to watch.
The game did see its fair share of dives, with Neymar at the helm in that regard, and the Brazilian did get lambasted for the same.
Once Real Madrid conceded, it didn't take long for people to try and predict the futures of the club and more importantly, manager Zinedine Zidane.
And that's when Cristiano Ronaldo decided to have a say. Understandably, so did Twitter, as praises flooded in for the record-breaking 33-year-old.
Of course, Neymar and PSG did get trolled on social media after the loss. Adding insult to insult. A viral-worthy picture did come out of it, though, as Ronaldo and Neymar were seen hugging it out at the end of the game.
Real Madrid's fans seem to have had a rather lovely Valentine's day, as the club they love so dearly, returned the love in full - just the way they wanted it.
Los Blancos couldn't have asked for a better result ahead of the second leg at the Parc des Princes next month. The battle may have been won by Madrid, but the war isn't done yet. Not by any means.
