An image of the crashed plane.

A plane carrying 81 people (72 passengers and 9 crew members), including 22 members of the Brazilian Serie A team , Chapecoense crashed off Medellin airport in the most unfortunate circumstances that included heavy fog, and an electrical failure on board the plane.

It lost contact with ground controllers around midnight and reportedly attempted a forced landing.

The team was on it's way to play the first leg of the Copa Sudamerica against Atletico Nacional – the winner of the tournament goes into the continent's most prestigious football tournament – the Copa Libertadores

These are the last known co-ordinates of the plane as tweeted by the flight tracking site Flightradar

The crash rescue is happening in the most difficult of circumstances, but there are nearly 90 rescue personnel at the site.

Here's a faint glimmer of good news -

There are six others who have been admitted to hospitals.

All doctors and medical professional in nearby hospitals have been called to their desks -

Football teams have expressed their solidarity for the club in this time of great tragedy. This from Brazilian giants Flamengo

Their opponents of the day, Atletico Nacional were one of the first to tweet out their prayers, saying that they were “profoudly sorry” and that they “stand in solidarity” with the team

Another top Colombian team, Barranquilla’s Junior, has reacted to the accident on Twitter. “We are praying for Chapecoense and the whole crew and we are beside you at this difficult time. All Junior supporters are with you,” it says.

International footballers too send in their prayers
