Ukraine 0-0 England: Player Ratings

What was hyped as a must-win match for England ended in a dull and listless 0-0 draw. Ukraine took the attack to Roy Hodgson’s men and England defended well, but the way England played will no doubt worry fans.

Let’s take a quick look at how players from both sides performed.

Andriy Pyatov – His biggest test came in the opening minutes of the game as he came out well to deal with Theo Walcott‘s clear-cut chance. The rest of the match was all about him collecting the odd misplaced pass or cross.

Rating: 5.5/10

Artem Fedetskiy – He put in a decent performance which saw him make a few runs down the wings in order to support in attack. His lack of finishing did cost Ukraine though as he had more than a few chances to bury the game.

Oleksander Kucher – The powerful defender didn’t have much work to do throughout the 90 minutes. He did get booked for a challenge on Theo Walcott, but apart from that managed to stand his ground for most of the match.

Yevhen Khacheridi – He was like a rock in defence. He did the basics well and not one of England’s forward players did enough to sufficiently trouble him.

Rating: 6.5/10

Vyacheslav Shevchuk – The veteran left-back isn’t renowned for his attacking prowess and it showed. However he did his defensive work very well and helped ensure that England couldn’t cause much trouble in the final third.

Taras Stepanenko – The defensive midfielder didn’t manage to exert too much influence on the game although it wasn’t for a lack of trying. All in all, it was a quiet game for him.

Edmar – The veteran midfielder’s contribution was limited to simply keeping possession of the ball and playing a few simple passes. Alongside Stepanenko, he didn’t manage to influence the game as much as he would have liked.

Andriy Yarmolenko – The young winger had a good game, making runs down the left wing and putting in a few crosses into the box. He was a constant threat down the right wing.

Rating: 6.5/10

Oleh Husyev - Primarily a winger and a full-back, he struggled to influence the game playing behind the striker. His lack of any real creativity was his undoing.

Rating: 4.5/10

Yehven Konoplyanka – The talented young forward was quite easily Ukraine’s best performer on the night with his surging runs down the left wing. Kyle Walker struggled to deal with him for most of the 90 minutes.

Rating: 7/10

Roman Zozulya – The 23-year old looked alright for most of the game, but his link-up play was quite poor at times and he didn’t do much to threaten England’s defence.
