Uruguay vs Panama Prediction and Betting Tips | June 23rd 2024
Uruguay will get their Copa America 2024 campaign underway against Panama at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. Uruguay have lifted the Copa America title 15 times but have not tasted success since 2011 and have been eliminated from the quarterfinals in the last two editions.
Panama, meanwhile, play in the tournament for just the second time.
The 2011 champions played two pre-tournament friendlies and, after a goalless draw against Costa Rica in the first one, they defeated Mexico 4-0 in the second one with Darwin Núñez bagging a hat-trick.
Los Canaleros played in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers earlier this month and registered wins against Guyana and Montserrat. They failed to make it three wins on the trot when they squared off against Paraguay in a friendly last week, suffering a 1-0 loss.
Uruguay vs Panama Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- There's not much history between the two teams and they have met just thrice thus far. The 2011 Copa America champions have a 100% record in these meetings, scoring 10 goals while conceding just once.
- La Celeste registered two wins apiece in the 2019 and 2021 editions of the Copa America.
- Two of Uruguay's three losses in the Copa America have come on penalties.
- Panama picked up one win in their maiden appearance in the Copa America in the 2016 edition while suffering two losses. They had a respectable tally of four goals while conceding 10.
- La Celeste have seen under 2.5 goals in their last seven games in the Copa America while keeping five clean sheets and failing to score in three games.
- Los Canaleros have failed to score in two of their last four competitive games.
Uruguay vs Panama Prediction
La Celeste looked in good touch in their pre-tournament friendlies as they kept clean sheets in both. They have suffered just two defeats under the management of Marcelo Bielsa, who has rich experience in the Copa America and led Argentina to the final in 2004.
Luis Suárez will play his fifth and final Copa America and will look to secure the title for the second time after 2011. He scored four goals in that edition, including the opener in the 3-0 win over Paraguay in the final.
Los Canaleros last played in the Copa America in 2016, when, coincidentally, it was hosted by the USA. They managed to register a win in that edition but failed to make it past the group stage. They will look to improve on that record. Fidel Escobar, Andrés Andrade, and captain Aníbal Godoy have been ruled out due to injuries that might impact their performance.
Considering the contrast in form between the two teams and Uruguay's dominance in this fixture, the 2011 champions should be able to record a comfortable win.
Prediction: Uruguay 3-1 Panama
