Video: AC Milan's Phillipe Mexes attacks Lazio's Mauri after being sent off

Phillipe Mexes choking Lazio’s Mauri during their game last night

In what was a shocking turn of events, AC Milan’s French defender Phillipe Mexes attacked Lazio’s Stefano Mauri after being shown a red card for retaliating after a foul from the Italian.

Once he was shown the red card, he proceeded to go ahead and choke Mauri and had to be pulled off him by teammates. The Frenchman, who is known to have a volatile temper, collected his 16th red card in 16 years of his career.

Following the game, he apologised for his actions, issuing this statement:

"I am here to take responsibility, which is only right when you make a mistake. First of all I apologise to the club, to my teammates and the fans because this is behaviour that has happened more than once in my career. I cannot accept the reaction I had. I didn't do much on the field, but after the red I reacted in completely the wrong way.”

He also said, “I have four kids, so I know this is not the right example to set as a father or as a player. I am aware of that sense of responsibility and I apologise. I have no excuses, as it's a football match and you cannot behave like that. I take responsibility and promise it won't happen again. It was my fault, that's all.”
