Video: Celebrations in Iran after World Cup qualification
Iran celebrates qualification for World Cup 2014 on the streets of capital city Tehran on Tuesday (June 18).
Scenes of wild celebrations unfolded in Tehran on Tuesday after the national team gained qualification to the 2014 World Cup.
Iran booked their place in Brazil with a 1-0 victory, over South Korea and their supporters were clearly delighted with the result –
Reza, Tehran resident:
“I’m glad Iran made it to Brazil. It really is a source of pride for our country. I hope that the team achieves the best possible results in Brazil.”
While Iran finished top of Group A, South Korea only secured second place by virtue of goal difference after finishing level on points with Uzbekistan, who won 5-1 at home against Qatar.
Elsewhere Australia beat Iraq 1-0, as Josh Kennedy headed home the winner that secured second spot in Group B.
Qualification caused celebrations across Iran, where the government had given a rare approval for supporters to spill into the streets.
