Video: Goalline technology set to make its bow at the FA Community Shield

The first official use of goalline technology will take place at the FA Community Shield match between Manchester United and Wigan at Wembley.

Paul Hawkins, Hawkeye’s inventor:
“Seven cameras looking into each goal. All of them are able to automatically track the ball. You combine the tracking information form all the cameras together to know where the ball is in 3D (three dimensional), and so as the ball is within the goal area, we know as soon as the ball crossed the plane of the goal that it immediately sends a signal to the referee’s watch within under a second.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger : “It’s vibrating. Do you wear two watches during the game? Replay from unnamed referee: “yes, we still have two watches. All four officials will wear this.”

Arsene Wenger, Arsenal manager: “People speak always about financial implications, but for me, that is secondary. The most important thing is to make the right decisions.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “I’m very happy and I hope you will make the watch work a lot.” (laughter)

Alex Horne, FA General Secretary:
“We work well with the Premier League on a number of fronts and this is something that we’ve been unified on for many, many years. Hawkeye, we’ve been testing this with the Premier League, we’ve been testing it at Wembley. We had them in for the Belgium game in 2012. We’ve all been supportive of introducing the technology.”

Alex Horne, FA General Secretary:
“It’s an interesting kind of tie up actually, that 150 years ago, a couple of miles away a few English clubs got together and decided to try and write some laws for this game that has become this global phenomenon. And here we see…. it’s probably one of the biggest developments in the game in the 150-year period. We introduced a crossbar on to the goal. We introduced nets on to the goal to help make a decision about whether the ball had crossed the line. And I guess this is the next evolution. This is the next step.”
