The Serie A match between Chievo Verona and AS Roma might have ended with an inconsequential scoreline of 0-0, but the match was marred by a midfielder Federico Mattiello’s horrific injury. The 19-year-old on loan to Chievo from Juventus had to be stretchered off with what seemed like a broken leg.

Mattiello’s injury occurred after a collision with Roma's Radja Nainggolan and had to be carried off the pitch and was immediately taken to hospital in Negrar, near Verona.
Juventus have sent their club doctor Fabrizio Tencone to collaborate with Chievo as Mattiello is set to undergo surgery.

The severity of Mattiello's injury came as a shock during the match at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi and coaches of both teams have sent their best wishes to the Italy Under-20 international.

Chievo boss Rolando Maran told La Repubblica Sport, “It was a horrendous scene out there on the pitch. The incident has upset us all a great deal.

“Federico has only been with us for a few weeks but he has done well and we can all see that he's a great lad as well as a good footballer.”

Roma manager Rudi Garcia also extended his wishes to the player saying, “The darkest moment in today's game was Mattiello's injury and my thoughts are with him.”

Nainggolan, who made the challenge with no ill-intent, came out on social media to offer his support and tweeted saying, “I’m so sorry for what happened to you during gameplay. You’ll come back stronger than before. Expect a hug.”
