Video: Matias scores absolute blinder in Yorkshire Derby

Marco Matias produced one of the best goals of the season for Sheffield Wednesday during his side’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United in the Football League Championship. The new summer signing showed off some of his magic to the fans with a splendid turn and finish, but his goal couldn’t help the club pick up all three points as Leeds cancelled out the lead courtesy Chris Wood’s goal in the second half.

The 26-year-old scored the potential Puskas award contender in the 37th minute, when he beat the offside trap to receive a clean long range pass from Liam Palmer. The forward calmly picked up the ball and flicked it over Leeds defender Liam Cooper’s head completely disorienting the defender before firing an unstoppable volley with his left foot, which went past Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri after hitting the underside of the crossbar and then into the net.

Even though Wood would later equalise for Leeds to spoil the party for Sheffield, Matias’ goal was the highlight of the game in the feisty derby between the two sides. The Portuguese forward began his career in 2008 with Sporting CP but failed to establish himself, which saw him play for some of Portugal’s lower division teams for the next few years.

He moved to Nacional from Vitoria Guimaraes B in 2014, where he had a breakthrough season. He went on to join Leeds United on a four-year-deal after making 33 league appearances and scoring 17 goals for his previous side.

The Yorkshire derby saw him make his fourth appearance of the season for his new club. He is starting to look like the attacking player Sheffield fans have been craving for long and despite not winning the game, Matias showed that he has talent, creativity, and can produce the occasional moment of magic.
