Video: Monaco's goalkeeper workouts to deal with deflections is ingenious

A steel barricade is used in training to help Monaco goalkeepers react faster to deflections

We always see goalkeepers failing to make saves when the ball is deflected into the net. Tough luck, right?

Not if you’re a goalkeeper at Ligue 1 club AS Monaco. They cover all their bases to make sure goalkeepers Danijel Subasic, Maarten Stekelenburg and Marc-Aurele Caillard are always in control of the situation.

What the coaches do is keep a steel barrier prone on the ground and kick shots at it. The ball hits the make-shift ramp, and depending on the angle it hits the bars, it rises up  in a totally different direction.

This forces the goalkeeper to literally be on his toes to ensure that he gets a hand to it, irrespective of the direction he is moving in.
