Video: Obafemi Martins scores a blunder-filled goal
Seattle Sounders registered a resounding 4-0 victory over Orlando City in the MLS. The match had plenty for the Sounders to celebrate as they saw the return of Obafemi Martins to their side along with promising debuts for Nelson Valdes and Roman Torres. Kaka’s side Orlando had a man sent off in the 40th minute and their defence just seemed non-existent as the home side broke through at will quite often.
Martins scored two goals on the day marking his return from groin injury that kept him out for about 2 months. The first came in the 17th minute when a superb passage of play saw Obafemi Martins running unchecked past a sea of Orlando players to run onto a Lamar Neagle pass and finish off the move to put the Seattle side ahead.
After Martins had given his side the lead, new signing Valdez consolidated it soon after half-time to give them a stronger base to build on. Martins then would score a blooper reel goal for Seattle followed by Thomas rounding off the scoring for them.
The Nigerian striker in the 62nd minute, was on target once again. This time scoring a goal that can only be described as a series of blunders that led to an opportunity for Martins that he also almost turned into a blunder before reacting quickly to correct it. It took only seconds but it makes for some hilarious viewing as Martins stumbles and fumbles his way to a goal. The result though was undebatable as the Sounders took full advantage of being a man up and punished Orlando’s defence for being lackadaisical.
For Martins’ second goal, Sounders won the ball in midfield through an Orlando City blunder and as Martins ran with it towards the opposition goal, he smacked the ball against a defender and as another Orlando player tried to clear it, the ball ricocheted off a Sounders man into Martins path and the former Newcastle man made a miscalculation in trying to chip the keeper who had rushed out and had to chase after it to make sure that the ball made it into the goal.
You can catch the goal at 2:30 in the video, but the rest is worth watching as well.
