Video: Steven Gerrard scores first MLS goal in LA Galaxy's 5-2 rout of San Jose Earthquakes

Gerrard made his official league debut for LA Galaxy, after earlier coming on as a substitute in the US Open Cup

Steven Gerrard’s Major League Soccer debut for LA Galaxy got off to a flying start, as the Englishman scored his first goal for the club in their 5-2 thrashing of local rivals San Jose earthquakes at the StubHub Center. The former Liverpool captain started in an attacking midfield position behind Robbie Keane and helped him pick up his second hat-trick in as many games.

The 35-year-old’s equaliser was LA Galaxy’s second goal of the match after Keane had scored a penalty earlier. He ran at the San Jose players from his own half before playing the ball to Keane, who crossed it back to Gerrard for an easy finish from 10 yards.

The San Jose Earthquakes looked like ruining Gerrard’s big day after Quincy Amarikwa scored twice in the opening 25 minutes to give them the lead, but the Englishman had other ideas. He became only the third player to score a goal, assist one and win a penalty in an MLS game this season, with former Serie A stars Sebastian Giovinco and Kaka being the others to do so.
