Zinedine Zidane’s son Luca Zidane made three saves but missed a panenka attempt in the shoot-out

Legendary footballer Zinedine Zidane’s son Luca Zidane played a crucial part in France’s penalty shoot-out victory against Belgium in the European Under-17 Championship semi-final. The young goalkeeper missed his team’s fourth penalty kick which he chipped over the bar but made three fine saves.

The 17-year-old made amends for his miss by saving the next shot helping his side book their place in the final. Zidane junior who is the French Under-17 team’s goalkeeper helped his team reach the final after both teams finished the match at 1-1.

In the shootout, while the score was tied at 1-1, Zidane after making two saves stepped up to take the next spot-kick himself. But his Panenka-style attempt went sailing over the bar. The keeper, however, managed to save the subsequent penalty from Belgium’s Ismail Azzaoui to put the shootout in favour of the French.

Striker Odsonne Edouard stepped up to take France’s next kick and converted it to send them into the final. Young Zidane and company will be facing Germany in the final. The Championship is being held in Bulgaria.

The youngster’s effort could not match his father’s famous goal against Italy during the final of the World Cup. Zidane’s panenka effort struck the bar before bouncing down into the net as Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon could only look on. 

The last time France won the championship was in 2004 when the likes of Samir Nasri, Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa led side won the trophy. The youngster plays for the Real Madrid youth team along with his three brothers where his father is a club legend and the current assistant manager.
