Villareal CF have officially banned the supporter who threw the banana at Dani Alves during their home clash against FC Barcelona.

During the match, a banana was thrown right in front of Alves who was about to take a corner. The Brazilian responded in a humorous manner by picking it up and eating it before executing the set-piece.

Following this incident, footballers and officials across various clubs posted pictures with a banana reflecting their full support to Alves’s reaction.

The disgraceful being was recognised on CCTV footage and he has been banished from the El Madrigal for lifetime. Spain’s anti-violence commission could heap further punishment on the offender as they are looking to remove all sorts of racism from the game.

This was what the club had to say about their decision on the matter.

“Villarreal CF would like to make it clear that the club deeply regrets and condemns the incident that happened yesterday during the match against FC Barcelona in which a fan threw an object onto the pitch at El Madrigal. Thanks to the security forces and the invaluable assistance of the Villarreal faithful, the club has already identified the culprit and has decided to withdraw his season tickets and issue a lifetime ban barring him from accessing El Madrigal.

“Once again our club would like to express its firm commitment to promoting respect, equality, sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the pitch and our absolute rejection of any act that is contrary to these principles, such as violence, discrimination, racism and xenophobia.”
