Why Chelsea should target PSG striker Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani

When two genuine world-class talents play in the same team and in the same position, it usually does not take long for one of the pair to become disenchanted at finding themselves second in the pecking order to the other. This could be the case with Edinson Cavani at PSG, who the Express reported that he could be willing to move away from Ligue 1 in the summer – inevitably, Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Uruguayan goalscorer.

PSG’s striker has a penchant for scoring, and the 11 goals which he has scored already this season is strong evidence of this. Cavani is Ligue 1?s second highest scorer, behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Chelsea are in dire need of a goalscorer; their player with the highest number of goals, Eden Hazard, has scored six times in the league, whilst Samuel Eto’o is the best of the strikers with a lowly two in England’s top tier. Bringing in Cavani would put an end to this striking weakness of Chelsea’s and make them formidable opponents.

Cavani’s link-up play is also excellent and this would suit Chelsea’s fluid philosophy, enabling the greater involvement of players such as Eden Hazard, Oscar and Frank Lampard. This can be seen through his 88% pass completion and short average pass length of 15m – Cavani is excellent at thrusting his supporting cast into the limelight as well by playing with his back to goal, and this would be hugely appreciated at Stamford Bridge.

It is not only link-up play which Cavani excels in. His creative abilities mean that the Uruguayan generates numerous chances for his team-mates; there have been 14 goalscoring opportunities made from the striker’s boot this season and this will be something which Mourinho’s team find extremely valuable. This means that, coupled with his goalscoring and link-up abilities, Cavani can also supply other attackers with the chance to score and this would make him a deadly threat to opposing teams in the Premier League.

It is impossible to fail to recognise Cavani’s brilliance and the statistics above only entrench this fact further into common footballing knowledge. After failing to acquire Cavani’s services this summer, if they could bring the Uruguayan to Stamford Bridge next July it would cancel the disappointment felt earlier this year and make Chelsea’s attack arguably the strongest in the league.
