Wigan coach Owen Coyle sacked

Wigan have decided to part ways with Owen Coyle after just six months in charge of the club.

Coyle was quoted as saying,”It is with great sadness that we have made this decision and I would like to thank all my football staff and the staff at the club, who have been very supportive of me in my time here.

“I am confident that with this set of players, the team can keep moving in the right direction.”

The club decided to part ways with the manager following a run of three defeats at home in 9 days.

First-team coach Graham Barrow and assistant manager Sandy Stewart will taking over the team for Wednesday’s trip to Leeds United.

The sacking seems harsh considering that many players followed the former manager Martinez in leaving the club despite Wigan having successfully entered into the Europa league for the first time. Coyle had to rebuild the team and brought in youngsters like Nick Powell and James McClean and had even taken Will Keane on loan from Manchester United recently.

The reality though is that the club was on an 890 minute goalless streak away from home. Adding to that was the fact that Coyle’s wigan has been playing very differently to the attacking style implemented by Martinez.

Fans were not amused when Derby county scored three goals withing 29 minutes of the start of the game at the DW stadium.

Ian Holloway is now the early favourite to become the next Wigan manager according to sky bet.
