World Cup Final will always be a regret: Lionel Messi
FIFA.com recently held an interview with Lionel Messi, taking a look back at the memorable tournament, he gave his opinion on five key moments from the tournament. The winner of the adidas Golden Ball said that they will forever regret the chances they missed in the World Cup final defeat to Germany. He also gave his views on Spain’s thrashing by Netherlands, Brazil’s heavy loss to World Champions Germany and more.
“I didn’t realise the crowd were chanting my name in the previous move,” Messi said of his first goal in the tournament. “I don’t know if they particularly wanted me to score, but expectations were certainly high, given our form coming into the tournament,”
“The nerves of the opening game can force you to make mistakes, so it was important for us to get a victory there”, Messi said on Argentina’s first win of the tournament.
I didn’t speak to Barca teammates after Spain lost 5-1 to Netherlands: Messi
The 27-year old Barcelona forward commented on Spain’s 5-1 loss to Netherlands, “It was a game we were all anticipating, because it involved two great teams squaring off.” he said. “It was a great game with a result nobody was expecting. We knew it was going to be great game and an even match, but in the end Netherlands won by big margin.”
When asked if he was in contact with any of his Barcelona team-mates at the time, he replied, “We were in touch, we used to talk. But in situations like that I don’t like to talk to them. I don’t want to bother. That’s the way I am in general, and I think it’s better to stay quiet in situations like that.”
After watching the World Cup finals clipping, he admitted that he still has regrets over the loss, "What can I say? It's a pity, we had so many good chances to win the game. We had the better chances and we'll regret the chances we had but couldn't score for the rest of our lives."
The Player of the tournament ended the competition with four goals, two behind the Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez. Below is the video of Messi’s interview with FIFA:
