Zlatan Ibrahimovic books city square for Malmo fans to watch PSG clash
Paris Saint German’s talismanic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic has reserved the main square for the fans in Malmo as he prepares to return to his hometown for the Champions League clash against his former club.
Ibrahimovic, now 33, has spent his career playing for some of Europe’s most elite clubs including Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan before joining the French champions in 2012. But it was at Malmo that the Swede started his career as a footballer, making his senior debut in 1999 and spending two seasons with the club before switching over to Netherlands to join Dutch giants Ajax.
However, PSG were drawn into the same group (Group E) with the Swedish outfit in this year’s Champions League draw and their prolific attacker, who is set for a homecoming on November 25, hired the city square for the fans to witness his return.
"I have previously said that the game will be heard all over Malmo. Now I've also made sure that all of Malmo will be able to watch the game," the Sweden international posted on Facebook.
"I'm on my way."
Malmo website crashed following PSG draw
After the draw concluded, Malmo’s official website crashed as fans flocked to the club's homepage to find out how they could order tickets for the highly anticipated match causing so much traffic to the server.
Following the incident, Malmo’s head of communications Peter Ahlander stated, “There was a lot of pressure on it [the website] just after the draw was made,” adding that the club were delighted with the draw.
Zlatan led the tributes to his former club when they clawed their way into the tournament for the second year running. He congratulated Malmo FF for making it to the group stage of the Champions League for the first time.
Earlier, Malmo qualified for the group stage at the expense of Scottish Champions Celtic who lost the Champions League play-off 3-4 on aggregate.
Ibrahimovic made 40 appearances for Malmo FF and scored 16 goals for them across all competitions. Since then, he has gone on to build a resume that includes playing for some of Europe’s household names.
However, the 33-year-old is yet to win a Champions League medal and will be hoping to end that curse with PSG this season. Since joining Les Parisiens in 2012, Ibrahimovic has guided them to three Ligue 1 titles and has reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League on three occasions.
