The origin of the Wendell skin in Fortnite
The Wendell skin in Fortnite was released on May 8, 2023, with the v24.20 content update. It was among the 42 skins from Epic Games Survey #5 that was conducted on August 25, 2022. Moreover, the skin is designed by Mauro Belfiore, a concept designer who has worked with some of the biggest game publishers in the world such as Valve, 2K, and Activision.
Interestingly, Wendell is one of the only skins to have a dedicated video trailer rather than a static promotional image. The trailer features Wendell and the squirrel that rests in his pocket, attempting but failing an adorable sausage heist.
Players were soon able to identify that the trailer was a reference to a scene from the popular 2006 animated movie, Over The Hedge.
The Wendell skin is a part of the Wendell & Walnut set. The initial name for this set was Wendell & Nutz, but Epic Games changed it silently with the v24.30 update. Meanwhile, the official description of this skin reads, "A loyal mountaineer with quite the bite."
Fortnite has seen a lot of furry skins lately, with little to no lore attached to them. Since most of these skins receive mixed to mostly negative reviews from the community, it is a mystery why Epic Games continues to tread this path.

The Wendell skin was last seen on July 14, 2023. It has been listed 18 different times on 17 different days in the Fortnite Item Shop. It can either be purchased as a standalone item for 1,200 V-bucks or as part of the Wendell & Walnut set for 1,500 V-bucks when listed.
