In the last couple of years, Wordle took the whole world by storm, becoming one of the most-played word puzzle games. It is a great game to test how strong your vocabulary is, especially with five-letter words.

Despite Wordle’s immense popularity, some people still haven’t heard of it. No need to worry, though—we've got everything you need to know about this addictive word puzzle game.

What is Wordle game?

Wordle is a daily word puzzle game developed by the Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle to play with his partner. He later shared the game with his close ones, and eventually made it public in 2021. In only a few weeks, it became a global phenomenon as many players started sharing their Wordle results on Twitter.

Wordle isn't a very hard-to-understand game but it can get challenging which makes it so addictive. Players need to guess the correct five-letter word within six guesses. Although players can take all their six guesses to find the answer, the optimal scenario is to get it within four.

What are the Wordle rules?

As mentioned above Wordle isn't a hard-to-understand game. Its rules are quite simple. There are just 2 rules you need to know before solving today's Wordle:

  1. Each Wordle guess should be a valid five-letter word.
  2. You can only solve one Wordle puzzle a day from a device.

How does Wordle work?

You have 6 attempts to guess the correct five-letter word. Once you enter a word onto the 6*5 grid, you will receive hints after each failed guess to help you get closer to the answer. You'll find how the hints work below:

  • If a box turns green, the letter is in the word and at that position.

  • If the box turns yellow, the letter is in the word but not in that position.

  • If the tile turns gray, the letter is not in the word. So, you shouldn't use it again for the remaining turns.

To win a Wordle puzzle, the player would have to get all five boxes of a row to turn green.

Is Wordle free?

After The New York Times’ acquisition of Wordle in 2022, many feared it would be put behind a paywall. However, this isn't the case yet. As of September 2024, there is no need to get a subscription or even create an account to play this word puzzle. Simply head over to the NYT Games section or download the NYT Games app to enjoy Wordle daily.
