Here's everything you need to know about what the Apple Watch Fall Detection feature is and how it works:

What is it?

As its name suggests, the Fall Detection feature in the Apple Watch can detect when its wearer falls. Once it detects a fall, it triggers an emergency call and notifies its local emergency helpline about it.

There are many instances when the user cannot get to their phone to call the emergency helpline after the fall. This feature automatically notifies the helpline after it discovers a fall, so they can send first responders to check up on the user's health. It can help them survive life-threatening injuries from falls.

The Fall Detection feature in the Apple Watch uses motion sensors like an accelerometer and a gyroscope. To detect a possible fall, these sensors monitor the user's behavior for sudden movements and acceleration from gravity.

It also uses the heart rate sensor to analyze the changes in the heart's rhythm, which should see a spike followed by increased or decreased heart rate. If the fall is too severe, there might also be a flatline.

The feature combines the data from all three sensors with Apple's algorithm to detect a fall. When that happens, it will start an audible alert with a timer. Emergency services will be notified when the time runs out. However, if you are okay, you can stop the timer by pressing the cancel button.
