iOS 18: How to use satellite messaging on iPhone?
Satellite messaging was one of the critical features of the new iOS 18 update in 2024. While satellite connectivity was first introduced by Apple in 2022 with the release of the iPhone 14 series, it was quite limited and could only send Emergency SOS messages back then. However, this functionality has been greatly improved with the release of the iOS 18 update, which even supports iMessage now.
This article explains how to use satellite messaging on the iPhone and everything you need to know about it.

How to use satellite messaging on iPhone?
iOS 18 provided iPhone users with the ability to send messages, reactions, and even emojis via satellite connectivity. Here's how to use satellite messaging on the iPhone:
- Launch the Messages app.
- A prompt will appear on the dynamic island asking you to connect to a satellite.
- Tap on Connect to Satellite.
- Now, align your phone toward a satellite according to the on-screen instructions.
- Next, go back to the Messages app and start sending messages.
Note: A satellite connectivity prompt won't appear on the screen if you have active cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity.
What is satellite messaging on iPhone?
The satellite messaging feature allows you to send critical messages to 911 or your family and friends if you ever get in trouble in an area with no network coverage. It is essentially an emergency SOS service that allows you to get help whenever you need it.
For this satellite messaging feature to work on your iPhone, you must be in an area with a clear sky. A cloudy sky can block the signals and make it difficult for satellites to connect to your iPhone.
What new features did iOS 18 bring to satellite messaging?
Satellite messaging has been here since the release of the iPhone 14 in 2022, but back then you could only send short SMS-based messages. The new iOS 18 brings support for iMessage via satellite.
Therefore, features like delivery/seen status reports, emojis, and tapbacks now work via satellite messaging, but you cannot send images or any other media files. As of now, RCS messages don't work via satellite connectivity as well.
