Gamer reports NVIDIA app caused frametime issues on Unreal Engine 5 games

An X user, @Sebasti66855537, reported that the Nvidia app had decreased the FPS and caused frametime issues on their system. The user also posted some pictures to validate their claims. The screenshots show an increase in FPS when the Nvidia app was uninstalled. The spikes in the frametime are also greatly reduced.

The user tested this phenomenon in two games — Black Myth: Wukong and The Talos Principle 2 — and the result was the same in both cases.

As much as a 17-18% FPS increase has been observed in the two titles, which indicates this improvement could be seen in other games. However, the user reported that this improvement was primarily in UE 5 titles.

Other users have raised concerns that this issue could be related to the Nvidia Overlay feature and not the app itself. However, user @Sebasti66855537 confirmed that the overlay was disabled before the tests.

Upon seeing this post, other users quickly repeated the tests and found a similar improvement in both FPS and frametime.

A user, @Cactus_Cacti3, reported that they gained 40-60 more FPS in Marvel Rivals, which is also a UE 5 title.

This user previously believed that the drop in performance could be due to some updates or their system acting up. However, upon seeing @Sebasti66855537's post, they tested it and noticed it was the Nvidia app that caused performance issues. According to the user, it was not the updates or the system as they initially believed.

Others also commented about seeing similar improvements with screenshots to validate their claims. While such a performance dip should have been detected earlier when the Nvidia app was in the beta period, it wasn't.

The Nvidia app was recently released out of beta and into the stable channel. That said, Nvidia usually patches issues quickly, so expect this bug to get fixed with the next app/driver updates.
