Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5: Is it worth upgrading the foldable phone?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 debate has become a hot topic of discussion since the tech giant unveiled the new foldable at the Galaxy Unpacked event. The Flip5 was a major upgrade to Samsung’s foldable lineup, introducing massive changes, including an enlarged cover screen with additional capabilities. While the latest device doesn't represent such a dramatic leap, it still boasts some impressive enhancements.
This article will compare both devices and explore whether the new launch is worth the upgrade.
Note: This article is subjective and solely reflects the writer's opinion.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5: Specifications
At first glance, both devices look very similar. They share the same screen size and weight, along with identical AMOLED display technology both inside and out. However, when folded, the latest Z-series smartphone is 0.2mm thin. While it is not a very big change, it's worth pointing out as it is one of the few changes you will see in the latest flip phone in terms of display and dimension.
The other difference is in the peak brightness level, which is increased to 2600nits from 1750nits for the full-screen display. A brighter screen means more visibility outdoors and immersive and detailed visuals.
Here are the other technical configurations of these machines:
The new foldable is priced at $1,099, which is $100 more than the launch price of its predecessor.
The Z Flip6 is available in six colors, including Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, Mint, Crafted Black, and the new White and Peach. The Lavender and Green colors have been discontinued.
That said, the RAM has been increased to 12GB from 8 GB. The storage capacity is still the same at 512GB.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5: Performance
The Z Flip6 comes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip under the hood, which makes it more powerful than its predecessor. To evaluate their real-life performance, I have gathered various synthetic test results for both devices.
This data is sourced from the NanoReview website.
There is a significant performance gap in both devices. The highest being 25% in the Geekbench 6 multicore test. This means the latest foldable will deliver optimal performance, especially in terms of multitasking.
Moreover, for the first time on a flip phone, you get a vapor chamber cooling system, which means you can expect sustained performance and less throttling.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5: Cameras
Samsung’s Flip series has struggled in the camera department. However, this time, the camera is the biggest highlight of the latest flip smartphone. The 12MP main sensor is replaced with an impressive 50MP one. This new lens supports 2x optical zoom and utilizes AI-powered zoom capabilities that extend up to 10x.
Beyond that, you still get the reliable 12MP ultrawide and 10MP selfie cameras. Excitingly, the ultrawide sensor now captures 4K video and is expected to provide better low-light performance.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6: Battery life and other improvements
With a slightly larger battery, 300mAh more to be exact, and considering the same display size and technology alongside a more efficient processor, it's safe to say that the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 will provide you with some extra usage time compared to its predecessor.
While the battery capacity is improved, charging speed hasn’t. Both phones support 25W wired and 15W wireless charging, indicating that the new model may require a bit more time to fully charge to 100%.
The Z Flip6 uses FTG glass instead of UTG, which is said to reduce the visibility of the crease of the full screen. The hinge mechanism has also been improved, which undoubtedly enhances the overall user experience.
Besides that, the new foldable device boosts some good AI features that include Interpreter mode for in-person translations, auto-generated responses to messages, and more.
Samsung has also promised seven years of major software upgrades for its new device compared to four years of its predecessor.
Is Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 worth upgrading?
To be honest, I find the new foldable very impressive. Samsung has done some great work in terms of performance, battery life, and cameras. However, the previous-generation model does all the basic stuff as same as its successor.
If you don't urgently need enhanced cameras and unparalleled performance, I would suggest sticking with your Flip5. You will not face any kind of issue while performing your day-to-day tasks.
