About Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2023
Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2023
A PGA Tour men's golf event, the Bermuda Championship, is held annually. This tournament, which began play in 2019, is held at Southampton Parish's Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda.
It was originally planned as a backup event for the WGC-HSBC Champions event, but it has now been upgraded to a full-field tournament with FedEx Cup point status, bringing in more elite players and offering larger prize money.
Irish golfer Seamus Power is the 2022 reigning champion, winning by just one stroke over Thomas Detry of Belgium. The 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship will be held at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda, from November 6 to November 12.
Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2023 History
During the 2020 season, in October and November of 2019, the PGA Tour held its inaugural Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Robert Trent Jones created the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish, Bermuda, where the event is held.
The prize pool for the 2019 event, which was initially slated as an alternate event opposite the WGC-HSBC Champions, was US$3,000,000.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic-related cancellations of the WGC-HSBC Champions in 2020, 2021, and 2022, the championship was upgraded to a full FedEx Cup point event, with the winner receiving an invitation to the Masters Tournament.
In 2020 and 2021, the prize pool for the full-field tournament was US$4 million and US$6.5 million, respectively, with Butterfield Bank and the Bermuda Tourism Board serving as co-title sponsors.

Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2023 Course
Southampton, Bermuda, is home to the golf club Port Royal Golf Course. The course, previously named Southampton Golf Club, was established in 1965 under the direction of Mr. Reginald Tucker and is situated in Southampton Parish. G.H. Taylor, Director of Public Works, gave the go-ahead on June 15, 1965, and the land was acquired in July 1965.
However, the fact that some of the region was once farmland and that one owner refused to sell to the course put the concept potentially in jeopardy. Undaunted, on December 1, 1967, work on the project was eventually started in earnest, and it was dubbed Port Royal Golf Course.
Robert Trent Jones, a golf course architect, designed the course. Land agreements forced multiple redesigns of the original layout, but the redesigned 16th hole—whose tee and green hung precariously on cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean—is now a famous and frequently photographed hole.
In 1970, the course was eventually finished and launched. It was renovated more recently in order to be ready for the 2009 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. This $14.5 million project is being led by Roger Rulewich, a member of the original design team, and the course reopened on July 21, 2009.
