NXT Vengeance Day Background
The Vengeance PPV has been around for almost a decade before NXT came to be known. The first Vengeance event was held on December 9, 2001. The time of the year was usually reserved for Armageddon PPV events. However, the event was dropped that year as the writers felt the term to be too sensitive given the conditions after the 9/11 Attack that year. Since then, Vengeance became an annual Pay-Per-View event.
From 2002, however, Armageddon made its return to its original December spot, and Vengeance was moved to July by the WWE. The event continued up until 2007 before going on an indefinite hiatus. It made a one-off return in 2011 before being retired by the promotion once again. In 2021, Vengeance was brought back once again. This time, it was made a PPV exclusive for the NXT roster. It was booked for the February month around the Valentine's Day.
It was known as NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day upon introduction. While the TakeOver name was dropped from all NXT events in 2021, Vengeance Day continued as a PPV and has since become an annual affair.
