What are the Oscars?
The Oscars, formally known as the Academy Awards, are highly esteemed awards recognizing artistic and technical excellence in the American film industry. These awards are considered the most significant and prestigious honors in the US entertainment industry, and they are awarded annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The winners in various categories are presented with a golden statuette, officially called the "Academy Award of Merit," but commonly referred to as the "Oscar," which depicts a knight in the Art Deco style.
The first Academy Awards were held in 1929 at a private dinner hosted by Douglas Fairbanks at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The ceremony was broadcasted on radio in 1930 and televised for the first time in 1953.
