About PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry

The Korn Ferry Tour is the golden card opportunity for aspiring professional golfers! Though several professional golfers participate in this developmental tour, the Korn Ferry Tour helps the golfers struggling or trying to reach the PGA Tour, or lastly, those who haven't earned enough FedEx points to stay on the level.

This tournament determines the players who'll get a chance to be on the greens and compete in the next session. At year's end, the top 30 players on the Korn Ferry of the money list get the PGA Tour membership next season. Every golf player associates Korn Ferry as the primary pathway to a successful PGA career, as it is the only way to earn their PGA Tour card.

It was not always the same; the Q-School used to be the primary gateway previously if a player wanted to earn the PGA Tour card, but ever since 2013, Korn Ferry has taken the lead in this matter.

The Korn Ferry Tour's History

The Korn Ferry Tour was formed in 1990, but it wasn't until 2013 that it gained momentum. Previously, it used to award five players a tour card via seasonal-long standings. With time and its growing popularity, the numbers have increased steadily.

Currently, they are giving out 30 PGA Tour Cards! Since its formation, The Korn Ferry has always hosted tournaments in the mainland United States. Though there has been an exception a few times, the tour was played outside boundaries and held in Mexico in 1993 for the Monterrey Open.

The Tour follows a fascinating tradition aside from having the match take place in mainland USA, i.e. every time since 1997, if a player manages to win three tournaments in one year on the Korn Ferry Tour. That particular player gets an immediate promotion to the PGA Tour for the whole year and for the coming year as well! This is generally known as 'battlefield promotion' or 'performance promotion', but since 1997, it has only happened 12 times, and the players are:

  • 1997: Chris Smith

  • 2001: Heath Slocum, Chad Campbell, Pat Bates

  • 2002: Patrick Moore

  • 2003: Tom Carter

  • 2005: Jason Gore

  • 2007: Nick Flanagan

  • 2009: Michael Sim

  • 2014: Carlos Ortiz

  • 2016: Wesley Bryan

  • 2020–21: Mito Pereira
