Qatar TotalEnergies Open History
The Qatar Ladies’ Open, currently sponsored by TotalEnergies and named the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, has been a mainstay on the WTA since 2001. After becoming a Tier-1 tournament in 2008, the event took a two-year sabbatical before making a return in 2011. As a result, 2024 will be the 22nd edition of the competition.
The first ever edition of the tournament was called the Qatar Total FinaElf Open, and started off as a Tier-3 competition. Martina Hingis was the maiden singles champion at the event, defeating Sandrine Testud 6-3 6-2 in the final. Off late, the Qatar Open has been alternating between a WTA-500 and WTA-1000 every year. In 2024, the tournament will be a WTA-1000 event, with Iga Swiatek being the double defending singles title-holder.
The Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex has played host to the Qatar Ladies’ Open since 2008, and also hosted the WTA Tour Championships between 2008-2010. It has a capacity of 7,000 people after its expansion. Anastasia Myskina, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova and Iga Swiatek are the most decorated athletes in the Doha-based event, with each winning the title twice. On the other hand, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula won back-to-back doubles titles in 2022 and 2023.
