Serie A - Record champions
Italian giants and 2019-20 Serie A champions Juventus are the most successful side in the competition’s history with 36 league titles. Additionally, they’ve been runners-up a record 21 times. The Old Lady in the last decade has been absolutely dominant as they won nine consecutive Serie A titles between 2011-2020.
The two Milan clubs, AC Milan and Inter Milan, are level on 19 titles each but have sort of faded in recent years. However, after receiving the backing from Chinese organizations, we could soon see the two giants of Italy challenging Juventus’ hegemony.
Genoa, Italy’s oldest professional club, have won the title nine times but haven’t been able to challenge since Juventus began their dominance.
Team | Titles |

Serie A - Rivalries
Derbies in the Serie A are pretty vociferous. Here are some of them:
Derby della Madonnina:
Inter Milan taking on AC Milan is always a spectacle. No matter where the clubs are in the points table, this is one game even the neutrals look forward to simply because of how much passion and intensity there is on the football pitch. Having won a collective 38 league titles, there is plenty at stake even when they aren’t challenging for major honors.
Derby della Capitale:
Not just a derby, a game akin to a war. One of the most heated up games, you just don’t want to be on the losing side if you’re a Roma or a Lazio player. The two sides were at their prominence during the turn of the century; Lazio won the 1999-2000 league campaign but Roma, boasted the likes of Cafu, Nakata, Totti and Batistuta.
Derby della Mole:
Before the Superga tragedy in 1949, Torino were on a roll and had won five titles in six years. After the aircraft tragedy, which killed the entire squad, they struggled but still managed to win the title after years of development in 1976. Juventus’ clash with their arch-rivals Tornio is the oldest derby in the league and the atmosphere is often supercharged.
Serie A - Present day scenario
The 2021-22 season ended with Italian giants AC Milan winning the league title by fending off a tough challenge from their arch rivals Inter Milan. The AC Milan fans were ecstatic to see their team win the Italian league after over a decade. Inter Milan finished 2nd as they fell short by just two points. The 3rd and 4th spots were occupied by Napoli and Juventus who will join the Milan sides in the Champions League 2022-23.
Jose Mourinho's AS Roma finished 6th in the table but they will still play in the Europa League as they won the inaugural Conference League 2021-22. Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez became the top scorer of the league by scoring 21 goals for his side. Tammy Abraham finished 2nd in the top scorers chart by scoring an impressive 17 goals in his debut Serie A season. Cagliari, Genoa, and Venezia are the three teams who finished in the last three spots which is also the relegation zone. As a result, these three teams have been relegated to the Serie B.
