2024 ISPS Handa Australian Open past winners: Exploring the winners of last 10 years

The ISPS Handa Australian Open is the next stop on the newly launched 2025 DP World Tour season. The tournament will be played at Kingston Heath Golf Club and Victoria Golf Club from November 28 to December 1.

The Australian Open is one of the oldest tournaments still played and one of the most prestigious on the European Tour. Not surprisingly, many of the world's top players have played and won here throughout its history.

This trend has continued in recent editions. Among the 10 most recent Australian Open champions are some of the best players in the world in those years:

  • 2023 Joaquín Niemann
  • 2022 Adrian Meronk
  • 2019 Matt Jones
  • 2018 Abraham Ancer
  • 2017 Cameron Davis
  • 2016 Jordan Spieth
  • 2015 Matt Jones
  • 2014 Jordan Spieth
  • 2013 Rory McIlroy
  • 2012 Peter Senior

After winning the Australian Open in 2013, Rory McIlroy won four more tournaments in the 2014 season (three on the PGA Tour and one on the DP World Tour), including two majors (The Open Championship and the PGA Championship).

The same happened to Jordan Spieth. After winning the 2014 edition of the event, Spieth went on to win five PGA Tour events in 2015, including two majors (The Masters Tournament and The US Open). He also won the Tour Championship that year.

In 2016, Spieth won the Australian Open again, capping off another exceptional season. In 2017, Spieth won three PGA Tour events, including the third major of his career (The Open Championship).

The latest example is Joaquin Niemann. The Chilean opened his final season by winning the Australian Open, then went on to win two LIV Golf tournaments and finish second in the individual standings.

Other top stars who have won the Australian Open

The event was first held in 1904, so the next edition will be the 107th. Throughout its history, some of the world's top golf stars have played there.

Local players won 23 of the first 26 editions, with the other three victories going to European players. The legendary Gene Sarazen became the first American player to win the Stonehaven Cup (trophy awarded to the winner) in 1936.

Four-time major champion, South African Bobby Locke, won in Australia in 1955. His compatriot and nine-time major champion, Gary Player, won the title seven times (1958, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1974). Player holds the record for most wins in the event.

Other legendary names on the list of champions include Jack Nicklaus (six titles), Arnold Palmer (1966), Peter Thomson (three titles), Greg Norman (five titles), Tom Watson (1984), and Adam Scott (2009).

Cameron Smith, one of today's top Australian idols, has yet to win the local Open. He finished second in 2016. Other big names who did not win were Ben Crenshaw, Payne Stewart, and Curtis Strange.
