2024 World Wide Technology Championship projected cut line explored
The second round of the 2024 World Wide Technology Championship is being played this Friday (Nov. 8), at El Cardonal in Diamante, Mexico. After this round, the usual cut will be made and only the top 65 plus ties will continue to play into the weekend.
The cut line for the World Wide Technology Championship is projected to be 1 under, with about half the field left to complete the round. The projection is well below what happened in 2023 when the cut line was set at 5 under.
Prior to 2023, the World Wide Technology Championship was played at a different course (El Camaleón Golf Course in Mayakoba). This is how the cut line behaved in the last five editions held there:
- 2022: 4 under
- 2021: 4 under
- 2020: 1 under
- 2019: 1 under
- 2018: 4 under
Given the current projected cut line, several interesting players would miss the cut. These include Patton Kizzire and Jhonattan Vegas, winners of the Procore Championship and 3M Open respectively, this season.
The 66th-ranked player in the FedEx Cup, Beau Hossler, is also missing the cut. However, none of the three aforementioned players have finished playing the second round.
The World Wide Technology Championship and the FedEx Cup Fall ranking
The World Wide Technology Championship is the sixth of eight FedEx Cup events in the fall of 2024. Most of the participants are competing to remain on the PGA Tour for the 2025 season.
The top 125 players in the FedEx Cup fall rankings will keep their tickets. Not surprisingly, most of the players currently in danger of being left out of the group are in the field.
Such is the case with Joel Dahmen, who is currently ranked 124th. Dahmen has all but guaranteed that he will make the cut with rounds of 70 and 67. He is currently tied for 12th place.
The opposite is true for Vince Whaley, who is currently tied for 12th. Whaley is three shots out of the cut line playing the front nine of the second round. The projection is that if he misses the cut, he will fall to 125th and be on the verge of losing his card for next year.
Another player in a very precarious situation is Alejandro Tosti. The Argentine has already finished his performance at El Cardonal with a score of 7 over, so it is almost official that he has missed the cut. Tosti is expected to move down from 128th to 130th on the leaderboard.
One player who might see significant improvement is Dylan Wu, who started the tournament ranked 138th. Wu is tied for second place at 9 under while playing the front nine of the second round. The result would move him up to 108th on the leaderboard and help him keep his card for next year.
